Working here has helped build my confidence so much

Charlotte - Bar Tender

Waxy O'Connor's (Glasgow)

Meet Charlotte

  • Why did you choose to work for us?

I had a friend who worked at Waxy O'Connors, who told me it was a great place to work, and they were right. Everyone was very welcoming when I first started, and having been to the pub several times before working there, I could see it had a great atmosphere among both customers and staff.

  • Tell us about your story so far?

I've been working at Waxy's for almost two years, and it's been wonderful! I've been given so many opportunities to develop my skills, and it's especially helped me build up my confidence so much. Last summer I won the whisky incentive we had on, which involved increasing our whisky sales over a six week period. The managers were very encouraging, and I learnt so much about whisky from training sessions we were given. For my prize I was given a two night stay in Dublin, which was amazing, with a tour to the Guinness Storehouse. This year I've been in a lot more training courses, which included a course on wine that sent me on a trip to Bordeaux! At the moment, I'm currently Christmas Sales Coordinator, so I will be kept busy in helping to prepare Waxy's for the busy festive season! However, with all of that aside, it's the many lasting friendships that I've made from working at Waxy's that has been the top highlight of my two years here!

  • What do you get up to on a typical day/shift?

A typical shift here would either be working on the bar or the floor; setting it up good – making sure everything looks lovely and presentable for customers, and making sure I'm all prepared for the shift ahead. I love talking to customers that come in, so I'm very chatty whilst serving, building up good rapports with them. When it's very busy, I focus on making sure everyone is getting what they came for at Waxy's and having a great time. By the end of the night, I help close down the bar, making sure it's nice and clean for whoever is coming in the next morning.

  • What do you like most about working here?

Like I've previously mentioned, I love talking to the customers that come in. We get a lot of tourists from all over the world coming in for a drink or some food, and to admire the bar, and it's so interesting to here all their stories from where they come from, or what they've seen or done whilst in Scotland. I also enjoy working with my friends; it makes the hard work that we do so worth it, and we all work so well together.

  • What’s been your biggest achievement so far?

Winning the whisky incentive last summer. It really boosted my confidence, and increased my already competitive nature!

  • What makes someone successful here?

Having the right attitude and work ethic – some shifts can be very difficult, due to how busy we are, but it doesn't necessarily feel like that, as we all work very hard, and we all work well together as part of a team. When everyone pulls their weight, we have successful shifts, and a lot of fun at work. In turn, we get the benefits in the form of treats such as amazing staff nights out!

  • Tell us about the training and development…

Glendola has an excellent range of training and development courses which have allowed me to gain more confidence and become a lot more knowledgeable in the industry. My product knowledge for what we sell has improved through different courses that I've been put through, and I've also been trained to be a 'Buddy Trainer', which allows me to train any new starts on how to work well in Waxy's. The management team we have are also great in allowing us to develop, with weekly staff meetings to inform us on what we need to improve at and what we've been doing well with.

  • What is it really like to work here?

It can be very demanding, but a lot of fun! It definitely isn't just another dull bar job, as everything is so fast paced. We all get on so well, it's like we're a little family!

  • What do you think makes us unique as an employer?

The amount of opportunities we are given to improve and develop our skills so we can efficiently do our jobs!

  • What would you say to someone who was thinking of applying?

Definitely consider doing so! Don't feel intimidated with how busy we can get; we are given so much training and advice that we can all handle a busy Saturday night, or Paddy's day! Everyone at Waxy's is super friendly and we all help each other out!
