Kevin - Assistant Manager

Meet Kevin

  • Why did you choose to work for us?

I worked at Le Monde before it was purchased by Glendola, and stayed with the company to see what they had to offer and if their aim of providing the best possible service, and listening to both customers and staff to ensure they remain outstanding in the hospitality area, was true, as this would help with my progression in the industry as well. I was then offered the role of Assistant Manager at Silk & Grain, moved to London and took on the Management Development Programme.

  • Tell us about your story so far?

I started working in hospitality the summer before I went to university, and throughout university, worked in places to get by, but it wasn't until I had finished my degree and got a job in a hotel and resort that I discovered I had a passion for the industry. Since then, I have always looked to better myself and learn wherever possible, which is a part of why I enjoy working for Glendola, as the training the offer is extensive and leads to better things, both for myself and for the company too.

  • What do you get up to on a typical day/shift?

On a typical shift, my job will be to ensure the smooth running of operations on the bar and floor if needed. This encompasses a number of things, and depending on the day and time, can vary from a busy Saturday night, wedding/birthday functions, work events, christmas parties and different masterclasses, such as cocktail, gin and whisky, meaning I need to be prepared for numerous different situations that can arise.

I am also there to help out senior management wherever needed. Away from the bar, I also look at new ways of encompassing current trends into the business, developing new recipes and perfect serves, identifying new products for the bar, training current and new staff, creating an edible cocktail on a weekly basis, and basically all round looking at the beverage side of the bar and how to improve it for our customers.

  • What do you like most about working here?

As well being a close-knit working environment, the main thing that I enjoy is the training and development side of Glendola. Being involved in training courses that are held in different venues not only allows me to learn and progress, but meet other employees of Glendola, which helps with the close-knit working environment that we already have in Silk & Grain, and expands it further to other Glendola units.

  • What’s been your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement at the moment for Glendola has been getting promoted to where I am now, and also passing the WSET Level 2 in Wine and Spirits which allowed me to visit Chateau Magnol in Bordeaux as a prize, along with other employees of Glendola throughout the UK.

  • What makes someone successful here?

Attitude. If a person's attitude is right, then everything else can fall into place. Glendola is able to teach, and offer training, but the right attitude is needed from a person for it to be successful and beneficial.

  • Tell us about the training and development…

As I've mentioned before, the training and development offered by Glendola is the main reason I enjoy working with the company. There is something for everyone, and if there is a specific course you would like to be involved in, the company will strive to make that happen. The opportunities are there for those who wish to take them.

  • What is it really like to work here?

The working relationship between not only staff in my venue, but staff throughout Glendola is what makes the place good, as you all pull together as a team. I feel that, for me, it is the best place I can be just now, both for personal and professional growth.

  • What do you think makes us unique as an employer?

As an employer, each venue differs and looks after themselves, meaning that we aren't just a chain where everything is the same. Each place is unique and it allows you to actually feel progression and not feel like you are just a number.

  • What would you say to someone who was thinking of applying?

That if they are looking to better themselves and have fun whilst doing it, then to apply and give it all they've got.

A bit more about you...
